Mandap or Chuppah? Planning a Fusion or Interfaith Wedding Canopy

By Shyam Agencies Design Team, Mandap designers, Rajkot, India · Updated

More couples now mix traditions in one ceremony, and the canopy is where it shows. A mandap and a chuppah share the same basic idea: a defined sacred space for the couple. The details differ, so settle those first.

How they differ

  • A mandap is a canopy on four pillars, with seating for the couple, a priest and family, and usually space for a sacred fire.
  • A chuppah is a canopy with open sides, and the ceremony is usually conducted standing beneath it.
  • A church-style ceremony centers on an altar or front of the room, with an aisle and often space for a rail or a few steps.

Because both canopies share a four-post structure, they combine more easily than many people expect.

Ask your officiants first

Before you choose a design, ask the people leading each ceremony what they need. Useful questions:

  1. Should the couple stand or sit?
  2. How many people stand with them?
  3. Is any fire, water or other ritual object involved?
  4. Is there any symbol, color or fabric that should be present, or absent?
  5. How long does each part take?

The answers drive the size and shape more than your mood board does.

Common ways to combine them

  • One mandap, two moments. Use the mandap for the Hindu ceremony and change the dress of the space, such as the fabric and flowers, for a second ceremony on the same day.
  • A mandap with a chuppah-style canopy. A lighter, open fabric roof over the same four pillars gives a shared look without losing the seating.
  • An altar-friendly layout. Keep the front of the room open and place the mandap so the aisle and the sight lines work for a second ceremony.
  • Two structures, one color story. Separate pieces for each ceremony, tied together by the same palette and flowers.

Size and layout

If the ceremony stands for part of the time and sits for the rest, plan the floor for both. A mandap that seats five people is a different size from one built only for two people to stand under. Our ballroom size guide will help you check it fits the room.
