Setting Up a Mandap for a Hindu Wedding: Layout, Fire Rules and Venue Checklist

By Shyam Agencies Design Team, Mandap designers, Rajkot, India · Updated

A mandap is more than a backdrop. The couple, the priest and often a few family members sit inside it for the ceremony, so the layout has to work for the people, not just the camera.

What goes in and around the mandap

  • Seating for the couple, and usually the parents or other family at the sides.
  • A place for the priest with room to work, and space for the offerings.
  • The sacred fire, when the ceremony includes one. This is the part most likely to cause trouble with a venue.
  • Clear sight lines. Pillars should not hide the couple from the first rows.
  • Room to walk around. The couple circle the fire during the ceremony, so plan the floor space, not only the footprint of the mandap.

The fire question

Many hotels and event halls do not allow open flame indoors. That is a fire-code and insurance matter, not personal preference. Ask early, in writing, and ask what they will accept. Common answers:

  1. Allowed in a contained vessel, with a fire marshal's approval or a standby person with an extinguisher.
  2. Allowed only in a certain room, or outdoors.
  3. Not allowed. Some families use a smokeless or electric alternative. Others hold that part of the ceremony outside.

Your priest may have views on what is acceptable, so bring them into the conversation before the venue meeting, not after.

Fabric and fire rules

Drapes, canopies and fabric panels often have to carry a flame-retardant rating at hotels. Our fabric and fire-code guide explains the standard, and we can tell you what fabric a given design uses.

Height and load-in

Measure the room's usable height at the mandap position, not the printed ceiling height. Then ask about the loading dock, freight elevator size and the time you are allowed to start building. Large crates have to fit through service doors. Our size guide covers the measurements.

Power and lighting

Some designs include lighting. Ask the venue where the nearest outlets are, and whether you may run cables across the floor. If the venue requires cable covers, it is easier to buy them in advance than to look for them an hour before the ceremony.

A checklist to send your venue

  • Ceiling height at the mandap position, and any sprinkler heads, chandeliers or air walls.
  • Whether open flame is permitted, and under what conditions.
  • Whether flame-retardant certificates are required for fabric.
  • Loading dock, elevator and door sizes.
  • Load-in and teardown times.
  • Where the mandap may be stored if it arrives early.

What we send you

With each order you get dimensions, crate sizes, numbered parts and an assembly video, so your decorator or the venue's crew can plan ahead. If the venue wants it all on paper, ask us and we will provide it.
