Outdoor Mandap Guide: Wind, Rain, Sun, Sand and Anchoring

By Shyam Agencies Design Team, Mandap designers, Rajkot, India · Updated

An outdoor mandap is a freestanding structure with a canopy, and a canopy catches wind. Most problems at outdoor weddings come from not planning for that, not from the structure itself.

Anchoring comes first

How you hold the mandap down depends on the ground.

  • Grass or soil. Stakes driven into the ground work well. Before anyone digs, call 811, the US call-before-you-dig line, so you do not hit a buried utility line.
  • Patios, decks and hard surfaces. You cannot stake these. Use weights or ballast at the base, and ask your decorator to size them for the canopy, not just the frame.
  • Sand. Sand does not hold stakes well, so beach setups use larger buried or weighted anchors. Plan extra setup time.

Tell us the surface in your first message. We will say what the structure needs.

Agree a wind plan

Decide before the day, not during it, who makes the call when the wind picks up. Pick one person, usually the planner or lead decorator, and agree what they will do: take down fabric panels, lower the canopy, or move the ceremony. Waiting for a gust to settle the question is how things get knocked over.

Check the forecast the day before and the morning of. Ask us what limits apply to the design you chose, and we will confirm them with the workshop before you book.

Rain

Wet weather mainly threatens fabric and finishes.

  • Have a covered backup space, even a small one.
  • Remove draped fabric if rain looks likely, since it gets heavy and stretches.
  • Wood and painted finishes handle a shower. Standing water and long soaking are different.

Sun

Bright sun fades dark fabric and dries out some finishes over time. If you set up the day before, shade the piece when you can. On the day, light colors photograph well in sun and stay cooler to touch.

Sand and salt

At the beach, sand gets into joints and salt air attacks metal fittings. Wipe the piece down and dry it before you crate it, and rinse metal parts with fresh water. Our Coastal Beach Mandap uses weather-resistant materials, but no finish likes to be packed away wet.

Permits and venue rules

Some beaches, parks and vineyards require permits for structures. Some limit hours, set-up methods or the use of stakes. Ask the venue or local office well before the date, and get the answer in writing.

Care afterward

Let everything dry before it goes back in the crate. Wipe surfaces with a soft cloth, keep numbered parts together, and store crated pieces somewhere dry and temperate. That is what keeps a mandap ready for the next event, whether it is yours or a cousin's.

Pieces made for outdoor use

The Carved Wood Outdoor Mandap and the Destination Wedding Mandap are built with open sides and weather-resistant fabric. Tell us your venue and we will recommend a size and an anchoring plan.
