Indian Wedding Stage and Sangeet Stage Guide for US Venues
By Shyam Agencies Design Team, Mandap designers, Rajkot, India · Updated
An Indian wedding often needs more than one stage. There is the stage for the reception, a stage for the sangeet or other dance night, and sometimes a smaller stage for photos. Each does a different job, so plan them separately and make sure they work with the room.
Reception stage
The reception stage is where the couple sit to greet guests and be photographed. It usually has:
- A raised platform with steps at the front or side
- A backdrop behind it
- Seating for the couple, often a sofa or a pair of carved chairs
- Space for family to stand beside them for photos
The stage should be clearly visible from the entrance and from most tables, so ask the venue where the head table and dance floor will go before you choose a size. Our reception stage and classical stage are built for this.
Sangeet stage
A sangeet is a night of performances, music and dancing, so its stage has to work for people moving, not just sitting.
- Floor space. Performers need room. A stage that looks fine empty can feel small with a group of dancers.
- Backdrop or screen. Many sangeets use a video screen or projection behind the performers. Tell us in advance if you plan one, so we can check whether a design can carry it.
- Steps and edges. Choose a design with solid steps, and ask the venue whether it requires railings or an access ramp.
- Sound and lighting. The stage needs space for speakers, cables and lights that do not trip anyone.
Our fiberglass sangeet stage is a light, modular option for events like this.
Questions to ask the venue
- How much floor space is the stage allowed to take, and where may it go?
- What is the usable ceiling height at that spot?
- Does the stage need a ramp, railings or any other access feature?
- Where is the loading dock, and how big are the service doors and elevator?
- How early can the crew start building, and when must it be gone?
Sizing the stage
Do not pick a size from a photo. Measure the room, mark the stage footprint on the floor plan, and leave space for the dance floor and walking aisles. A good rule is to start from the dance floor and fit the stage around it, not the other way round. If the room is tight, a stage with a lower platform or fewer steps may fit better than a smaller overall design.
Buying or renting a stage
Renting a stage works for a single event. Buying can make sense if you will use it for several family events or you are a decorator renting stages out. Modular stages that ship flat and assemble in sections are easier to move and store. Our buy or rent comparison shows how to compare the costs.
Matching the stage to the mandap
Many couples want the ceremony and reception to feel connected. You can match pillar style, finish and color across the mandap, stage and backdrop. If you want a coordinated set, we can build it together as a custom design and send a free 3D mockup within 48 hours.
