Indian Wedding Backdrops and Entrance Gates: Buy, Rent or Build

By Shyam Agencies Design Team, Mandap designers, Rajkot, India · Updated

Backdrops and entrance gates set the tone before anyone reaches the mandap. They frame the photos, mark the way in, and tie the decor together. Here is how to think about them, and when it makes sense to buy one instead of renting.

What a backdrop does

An Indian wedding backdrop can sit behind the mandap, behind the reception stage, at the photo area or at the entrance. It gives the space a finished look and hides the walls and equipment behind it.

Common kinds:

  • Panel backdrops. Carved or molded panels, often with jali (lattice) cutouts. They hold their shape and can be reused.
  • Fabric backdrops. Drapes on a frame, usually quicker to change and lighter to ship.
  • Photo backdrops. Smaller pieces for a dedicated photo spot.
  • Stage backdrops. Larger, built to match the stage and the mandap.

Our Indian wedding backdrop is a reusable option you can pair with a stage or mandap.

Entrance gates

A grand gate marks the entry for the baraat (the groom's procession) or the reception. It works well at hotel entrances, banquet halls and outdoor venues where guests walk in together.

Things to plan:

  • Size. Measure the entrance and the path leading to it.
  • Access. Make sure the gate does not block fire routes or doors.
  • Anchoring. Outdoor gates need weights or stakes. See our outdoor guide.
  • Lighting. Gates look best with light on them, so ask where power is.

See our Grand Wedding Entrance Gate.

Questions to ask the venue

  1. Where may the backdrop or gate be placed, and how tall can it be?
  2. Is there power nearby for lighting?
  3. Can anything be fixed to the walls, or does it have to stand alone?
  4. How do we get large crates through the doors and into the room?

Buy or rent a backdrop?

Backdrops are easy to rent, but a rented one is usually shared with other events, so it may not match your design. Buying lets you choose the size, finish and color, and reuse it for later family events. Decorators who buy can rent the same piece repeatedly. Our buy or rent guide shows how to run the numbers.

Matching it to the mandap

A backdrop works best when it echoes the mandap in pillar style, finish and color. If you are ordering both, ask us to design them together. We can build a matching set as a custom design and send a 3D mockup within 48 hours.

Shipping and setup

Pieces ship crated with numbered parts, so a small crew can assemble them. Plan to order four to six months ahead of the event so there is time for changes and shipping.
