Fiberglass, Carved Wood or Crystal: Which Mandap Material Should You Choose?
By Shyam Agencies Design Team, Mandap designers, Rajkot, India · Updated
Materials decide almost everything about a mandap: how much it weighs, how long it lasts, what it costs and who has to carry it. Here is how the four common choices compare.
Fiberglass
Fiberglass is molded, so it holds fine detail such as jali panels, arches and carved-looking motifs without the weight of solid wood. It is painted or gilded, and it can be repainted later.
- Good for: hotel ballrooms, rental companies, anyone who will move the mandap.
- Watch for: deep scratches show the shell, so crate it properly between events.
- Setup: our fiberglass designs usually go up with two people in a few hours. Parts are numbered.
Hand-carved wood
Real wood, carved by hand. It is heavy, and it is the traditional choice for temples and families who want a piece to last decades.
- Good for: temples, community halls and permanent installations.
- Watch for: weight and shipping volume. It costs more, and it does not like damp storage.
- Setup: a larger crew, and more time.
Crystal and acrylic
A fiber or metal frame dressed with faceted crystal or acrylic elements. Nothing catches ballroom light the same way.
- Good for: glamorous reception-style ceremonies.
- Watch for: the crystal pieces need careful handling and padded packing. Plan time for cleaning before the event.
Floral designs
These use reusable artificial flowers on a fiber frame. You get the full look of a florist's mandap without wilting, and nobody has to arrive at dawn to build it.
- Good for: couples who want a lush look and a piece they can use again.
- Watch for: the flowers can be fluffed and rearranged, but sun and dust will age them over many events.
The short version
| If you are... | Start with |
|---|---|
| Renting it out many times a year | Fiberglass |
| Furnishing a temple or hall | Hand-carved wood |
| Wanting glamour in a ballroom | Crystal and acrylic |
| Marrying outdoors or at a resort | Floral or weather-resistant wood |
| Buying once for one wedding | Whichever matches the room |
Cost
Wood costs the most, crystal sits close behind, and fiberglass and floral designs cost less. Size, finish and carving depth move the number more than the material label does. Our price guide explains what drives it, and the quote shows delivery and duty as separate lines.
