Mandap Rental Cost vs Buying: The Math for US Families
By Shyam Agencies Design Team, Mandap designers, Rajkot, India · Updated
Renting is simple and cheaper for a single event. Buying makes sense when the same mandap will be used again. Here is how to decide.
Step 1: Count the uses
Be honest about how many times you will use it. Common patterns:
- One wedding. Rent.
- Two or three family weddings. Siblings and cousins often marry within a few years. Buying and reusing can beat renting each time.
- A decorator. A piece rented many times a year pays back quickly.
- A temple or hall. Used all year, so buy.
Step 2: Add up the true cost of each option
Renting: rental fee per event, delivery and setup, a deposit, and the chance that your preferred design is already booked on your date.
Buying: the delivered price (freight, duty and delivery should be in it), storage between events, and setup labor each time. Ask any seller whether duty and delivery are included, since they can add up when importing yourself.
Step 3: Compare at your number of uses
Divide the purchase cost plus storage by the number of uses to get a cost per event, and compare it with the rental fee quoted in your city. If the cost per event falls below the rental fee at your expected number of uses, buying wins. Also count resale: well-made mandaps can often be sold or loaned to other families.
Step 4: Consider control
Owning gives you your choice of finish, no date conflicts, and the ability to rehearse setup. Renting gives you someone else's crew and no storage.
Send us your expected number of uses and venue, and we will run the comparison with a real delivered price.
